Ear Nurse Specialist Training

The 'orientation/training' of the registered nurse hoping to become a specialist in this field, is at present,  provided by the ENSG (Ear Nurse Specialist Group).

It is important to remember that adequate training is essential.  The ear is a sensitive area of the body, and the Ear Nurse Specialist Group is committed to a high standard of care, skill and competency within this specialty.

(Quote:Some ear care procedures are highly specialised and it is particularly

important that those undertaking any of these procedures are competent

to do so, prepared by appropriate training and continuing professional

development commensurate with the role. Individuals have a professional

responsibility to recognise the limits of their own competence)

(Ref: Scottish Best Practice doc.)

Criteria for application:

One must be a Registered Nurse with a minimum of two years experience, and the nurse must be appointed to a position within a  District Health Board Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Department or Community service.

The programme offered is composed of indepth theory and practical sessions, and clinical observation period.  A high standard of nursing and commitment is expected.

There is a period of progression and assessment over three years, and accumlulation of practice hours.  Within her own DHB  PDRP the ear nurse may work towards  Nurse Specialist status.   Progression to a Nurse Specialist involves many hours of clinical experience, autonomous practice, post graduate qualification, commitment and professional input to the ENSG .

There are many nurses within the group with Post Grad qualifications who would be willing to offer suppport and advice to those nurses wishing to follow along that pathway.
