Knowledge, Skills, and Framework document

The KSF document aims to draw upon core issues and principles central to developing and maintaining high standards of competence as well as professional integrity in the speciality of Otology nursing.

“A nurse is competent when they possess the skills and abilities
required for lawful, safe, and effective professional practice without direct supervision. A competence framework is a collection of competencies that are thought to be central to effective performance “
(ref: Royal College of Nursing framework for Aural Care)

Familiarise yourself with the framework and think about your present level of practice and what you are hoping to attain.
Take time to reflect on your practice, and think about your understanding of your knowledge, clinical skills, competencies, and safe practice.
As with all Knowledge and Skills Nursing Frameworks, there is a requirement for associated training and qualification guidelines.
Next step is to proceed with your clinical self-assessment when ready and submit to ENSG Secretary for the Expert Advisory Group Mentors to inspect.

Assessment is part of the teaching and learning process designed to assist you in evaluating your own progress, facilitate feedback, assist with identifying learning needs and establish that you have achieved the required knowledge and skills.

“Advanced nursing practice is the ability to apply the latest evidence to nursing practice and knowledge to contribute to advances in specialist nursing areas.
Advanced nursing practice roles have continued to develop over recent years to accommodate the increasing complexity of the population's healthcare needs. Preparation of nurses for advanced specialty roles has, therefore, become a priority for the profession, the Nursing Council of New Zealand, as the statutory body, and healthcare providers.
Advanced nursing courses draw on evidence from biomedical and social science research to equip nurses for the care and treatment of patients in any specialty area.”
The ENSG is hoping to develop a series of preliminary learning modules in Otology Nursing to be available on the ENSG website.
This qualification may be required for all registered nurses new to the role, and those who require further learning and teaching, theoretically and practically. Thus, enabling progression to a more advanced course
.
Progress for the advanced Otology Nursing course (PGD) is temporarily on hold with Wintec, and it is hoped to be available for launch in 2026
